According to the Income Tax Act, every taxpayer who is eligible for an Aadhaar must furnish their Aadhaar Number or Enrollment ID at the time of filing the ITR. To start with, you need to make sure that you have a valid Aadhaar card issued by the Indian government in order to be eligible for IT return filing. If your Aadhaar has one or more errors, the chances are that the income tax department will ask you to provide the correct ID details or may even reject the return.

Now that it has become mandatory to link your Aadhaar with the ITR, it is important to be aware of the various ID issues that might lead to the rejection of your ITR. Before that, only a PAN card was needed as Identity Proof for the filing of income tax returns. In a recent announcement, the government has made it compulsory for taxpayers to link their Aadhaar cards at the time of ITR filing, the aim behind which is to increase the authenticity of tax returns and improve the collection of taxes.

The criteria are revised from time to time for accurate listing and record maintenance. Income Tax Return (ITR) filing is mandatory for all Indian nationals whose annual earnings is over Rs 2,50,000/- in a Financial Year.
